Aliens: Colonial Marines preview
If you were hoping you’d find this much-awaited game in your Christmas stocking, you’re going to be disappointed as it is one of 3 big releases pushed back to early 2013 – Sega say the 12th of February, to be precise.
Aliens: Colonial Marines is a first-person shooter, and (according to film director James Cameron) is the most faithful game/film adaptation to date. All the teaser trailers and previews look very promising, and the majority of the forums out also gave it the thumbs up.
The player role is that of a United States Marine. There is access to the entire movie arsenal, such as the flamethrower, pulse rifle, pistol, smartgun and RPGs. Initially announced as a squad game, this was eventually dropped to let the player enjoy more gameplay. Randy Pitchford, Gearbox Software’s president of development said, “We actually wanted it to be a very accessible experience, the goal is not to have complicated interfaces, we’re not worrying about having things like squad command, you don’t need fire maneuvers… there’s no maneuvering on an alien”. The player can either enjoy the game on their own, or have other players drop in and share the experience.
“Gauntlet Runs” sees the marine having to get from one point to another, destroying all enemies on the way. The player gains experience points as the kills pile up. Thee points allow the player to upgrade their weapons and change their appearance, plus unlocking various skill sets.
“Last Stand” is the equivalent of being a cornered animal. During these moments, the player must defend a specific area by welding up doors (I saw this in a preview and was really impressed) or setting up sentry tunnels.
All the movie xenomorphs featured in all three films are up for the kill. You’ll see the Facehugger, Chestburster, the Warrior, the Drone, Queen, and the Runner from Aliens 3. However, not all enemies are aliens; you’ll find yourself fighting human beings in the form of Weyland-Yutani mercenaries. Sega and Gearbox Software have also introduced some new xenomorphs, so this is something I’d love to see.
Maybe one for Valentines Day then, right?
